The youth are coming!
06/05/2011 by Kate.
It’s nearly time for Youth Afloat - that time of year when we pray it won’t rain (whatever the gardeners might be pleading for!) so that the local scouts and guides can enjoy a weekend of waterways activities. The tent is up and all is ready. Tomorrow we have an extra bit of youth afloating - the local Beavers (small scouts) are coming to find out about the canals. They will be here from 6-7.15 with painting, walking and stories planned - with a guest visit from Muddy Waters. Then the Youth Afloat proper with scouts arriving Friday evening and guides with us for the day on Saturday… more help from TCCC members is always welcome, get in touch with Mark or myself.

… and now the loo bit
27/04/2011 by Kate.
Last week’s link was to the IWA Inglesham Lock appeal, this week it is the turn of our plan to twin the water point at Thrupp with a block of school loos in Burundi.

A Lock and a Loo!
18/04/2011 by Kate.
Both subjects very close to the average boaters heart! At the AGM last week the club voted to support a lock restoration project at Inglesham - gateway to the Cotswold canal - and to make a smaller donation (£240, equivalent to about 10% of the amount we have raised in the last few years) to a Tear Fund project ‘Toilet Twinning’. We are twinning our beautifully upgraded and smart water and sanitation point with a block of school loos in Burundi - seemed a good way to recognise how fortunate we are to have clean water and safe sanitation. Not to mention very shiny blue tiles…The other 90% of any fundraising we do during the year (surplus from any ticketed event, raffles, the auctions at the annual dinner, the proceeds from the bookshelf at the Wide) will go to a project to restore the lock that once linked the Thames with the Cotswold canal. There’s lots more information on the appeal website here about what needs to be done, the workplan for 2011 and where our donations might be used. And there are tentative plans for a visit in September to see how it is progressing…

Easter jollity at Annie’s
11/04/2011 by Kate.
Over the Easter weekend Annie’s tea room at the Wide will be busy with egg hunting, canoes and Zorbs (worth dropping in just to see what on earth one of those might be). Or you could just eat cake…There are more details here

Reminder to book for the working party meal at The Boat
09/04/2011 by Kate.
It’s nearly here… the AGM and the working party. Don’t forget to book for the meal in the evening. It’s £12.50 for two courses (so quite a saving on the usual prices) - you should have had the menu with Wide Views or via a social email. Or, you can contact me, Kate, and I’ll resend it. But… there are only 22 places and half are already reserved…

A busy weekend coming up
04/04/2011 by Kate.
It’s the AGM on the 15th and the working party on the 16th so, if you uncurled from winter hibernation already, now is the time for a stretch and to look out those gardening gloves. Especially as we have arranged a special rate for a two course meal at the Boat Inn on Saturday evening. The AGM is a an important annual meeting, a chance for every member to hear about how the committee is managing the club on your behalf. It’s also a grand chance to catch with anyone who is anyone and hear about the club’s activities over the last year as well as plans for the next one.The working party does involve work but there’s plenty of chance to catch up with old friends, make some new ones and drink tea. And the Wide always looks so lovely in the spring. And this year we’ve organised a special deal with the Boat Inn - a two course meal for £12.50. If you haven’t booked already get in touch with your trusty (if occasionally chaotic) soc sec for details and to book. See you there…

A good time…
13/03/2011 by Kate.
… was had by all at ‘Where the Working Boats Went’ by Life and Times at the village hall a couple of weeks ago. Both our adopted charity and the hall ended the evening a little better off - the collection for First Community Responders took us to our target of raising enough to provide one new/additional defibrillator. If you missed the show this time you can catch it again on July 22nd at Tooley’s boatyard in Banbury as part of this year’s ‘Theatre in the Dock’ (July 21st-24th).

TCCC charity of the year
09/01/2011 by Kate.
… is First Community Responders. Our fundraising will help to buy a defibrillator for the Kidlington group - the one that could just save your or my life. Here is a bit from their website…
“Whenever an emergency 999 call is made, an emergency Ambulance is immediately dispatched and a first responder is also directed to the emergency. First Responders are asked by the Ambulance Communications Centre to attend emergencies in their area. The types of emergencies attended may range from collapse due to medical problems and accidents in the home or public place.”
Any profit we make from Where the Working Boats Went on February 26th will contribute a little more to that target of a new defibrillator. And you will have a grand evening in the company of good friends and fine musicians and performers.See you there!!
